How the Q and W keys will speed up your video editing in Premiere Pro

If you are learning to be a faster video editor than there’s two keyboard shortcuts that you need to learn right now. These two short cuts have been called a game changer when it comes to speeding up your editing.

It’s the Q and W keys.

2 keyboard shortcuts that will speed up you editing in adobe premiere pro

Whether you are cutting down an interview, trimming the heads and tails of of dailies, or picking the best short for your vlog after stringing out all of your footage — using the shortcuts for Ripple Trime [Next/Preview] Edit to Playhead will save you time.

Plus it’s super easy.

When editing in your timeline if you hit Q everything between your playhead and the previous edit you have made will be trimmed and the gap will be closed.

Likewise, when you hit the W key everything between your playhead and the next edit will be trimmed from your timeline and the gap will be closed.

This is also often called “Tops and Tails” in other NLE suites.

Make sure you try this out first. If you timeline is complicated with lots of different audio and video tracks then using the Ripple Trim to Playhead shortcuts might screw some things up. You might need investigate locking tracks to prevent the Ripple Trim to Playhead from affecting other audio and video tracks you may have stacked.
