Here’s a great Adobe Premiere Pro tip!
Did you know you can change how your timeline scrolls in Adobe Premiere Pro when you are in playback? There are three choices. Page Scroll is the default. Then there is Smooth Scroll and No Scroll. I have no idea why you might use No Scroll if you do clue me in ok?
If you having trouble visualizing what I am talking about here’s what the default behavior, Page Scroll, looks like. When the CTI gets to the far right your timeline advances and
Now watch this. Here’s how you change your Timeline Playback Scrolling behavior. We will change it to Smooth Scroll. In your Adobe Premiere Pro Preferences (I’m on a Mac) find “Timeline” towards the bottom. Then a panel will open up.
And here’s what Smooth Scroll looks like. Your CTI stays smack dab in the center of your timeline.
Finally, if you are interested, here’s what the No Scroll Option looks like. You CTI (Current Time Indicator), or what some people call your “Play Head”, move out of your view.

Thank you! I forgot how to do this. I use no scroll almost all the time, when I’m looking at one section and then the playhead passes it, I was annoyed when the visual would reset to that spot (much less follow the playhead. I can just grab the playhead back to where I want it.

Got a No-Scroll use for ya! When you have long clips and you want to survey what’s happening down the line (specifically for long takes, like a talkshow), No-Scroll lets you zoom outside the current play area. Which is what I was looking for. Thanks for your help!

THANK YOU! I wanted to turn the scrolling OFF, so I could while editing a long Song, place in and out points, square up my display so I can see in and out, (zoomed in as much as possible), then, having gone into the playback settings and turned on ‘loop’, I hit enter and see my loop happening! Now, while it is playing (and now not moving all over the place!) LOL 🙂 I can grab the in or out point and drag it a little (which is instantly reflected in the next loop playthrough). See? I can edit loops in Premiere, LIVE and with total control now 🙂
With Auto scrolling this was hard, (I could not ‘zoom’ in as much as I wanted or it would jump back and forth)
and with Smooth Scrolling it is impossible, but with Scrolling OFF here, I have total control, things stay where I want them, (and fully zoomed in) so I was able to Adjust my ‘Loop Size’ until it was perfect! Finally it is easy to make/edit audio loops in realtime!
( In addition to turning on Loop, I also turned on ‘Play Audio while Scrubbing’ in audio preferences and added the Play VR Video button so I can edit in VR with Motion Controllers, or edit with just my hands and Hand Tracking. ) I might make a video about this now! )
